There is zomething about zombies!

What is it about the undead we love so much? Since George Romero wrote the rules for zombification, we have had a love affair with the shamblers, the running mad men, and the decaying dudes.
Romero always indicated that his movies were about far more than a bunch of zombies and indeed, he explored racial situations, crowd behavior, and social tension. Infamously the message "they are us. We are them" has been the underlying theme. We wonder what it is like to lose the familial connections, our sense of morality, and sense of self. That scares us. We don't want to be "like that" and yet, as much as we fear it and fear it happening to those we love, we are also drawn to it.
I think we love to watch zombies because they are the ultimate in adversaries. They look like us, but they are the enemy. Zombies can't think, and yet, they are a worthy opponent. They have weight, they have no fear, they feel no pain, and they feel no remorse or sympathy. They are us, but without the human parts. They are the antithesis of what people are and yet...they look like us, with a little rot and ruin for fun.

What to read? Maybe a new catt dahman book...it's a weird western...Doc Holliday and the boys fight blood suckers when they aren't involved in gun fights. Try Wild Boys.  Maybe you want a top seller like Mark Woods' Fish story. Missing zombies? Get After and entertain yourself until the return of THE WALKING DEAD. Oh a chill is what you like? Try Amanda's book and you will feel haunted.

How about some Fantasies? These have great reviews and  will thrill!

6 Authors. 6 Characters. 6 Endings. Get the ending that YOU want! It's a sexy, scary, unusual book.
"This review is from: Feral Hearts (Kindle Edition) Scary and bloody and with some crazy vampire erotica through out.... this is a pretty cool story and I love how each author contributes an initial character sketch and background. Fabulous. The endings were awesome, too. I enjoyed each one. I am hard pressed to pick my favorite. Another winner by Mr. Cardillo and the other writers! Great job!"

This is a children's book supposedly, and there is no bad language and it is about children...BUT. It's also a book for anyone who loves colorful print books. Zombie  fans should have this on the shelf. it's about friendship, and sorrow, a love for friendly animals, and about...ZOMBIES. Ages 2-102 will love this one. The prose are sweet and the illustrations are vibrant.

We will allow only page 1 to be used, with the cover, as review images.

Sparky Marky

He Sparks!

Picture
JEA snapped up Mark's work. Time of Tides is in ebook form and it sells every single day. Every. Day. While we are excited for him, he is feeling the pressure of writing for an audience now (and I am so glad he knows how I felt now! It's not easy!). Mark is soon to released in Feral Hearts, Lycanthroship, a print version with Amanda Lyons, is in several anthologies to include Midnight Remains, and is working on several novellas and novels. He is also subbing to Rejected for Content.

If you haven't read Mark's works, be prepared. He is unique. Horror like Richard Laymon, English taste, Clive Barker imagination, S. King's heart...it's hard to describe Mark's style but he hits the soft spots, and never pulls a punch. To me, it is very modern horror with a lovely English feel. Let's call him retro-modern. Let's cal him scary. Hell, I call him Sparky Mark and that may be exactly how we all can describe his writing.  He sparks.
Mark Woods, known as Sparky Marky, is one of those people who can turn coal into gold with only a touch. Trust me, I have seen it. I met Mark when he was a book reviewer, and I felt gutsy enough to send him manuscripts to review. I got what I wanted, which was honesty, but I also got a kick in the rear. He went over one of my books and ripped it to shreds for pacing issues and more. In tears, I had to decide if a reviewer's opinion mattered that much, and  what I needed to do. I rewrote the book and had a contract for the nine book series within a month.
What struck me was how Mark did a detailed review and hit upon every element, explaining what was strong and what was...well...awful. Almost in defense, I asked why he didn't write books for himself since he was such an expert! (insert angst here) He admitted he did write but never shared.

won't return for a while.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the new season. We all want to know how the characters will get out of the latest situation, what the new place is all about, and how will the others favorites catch up to their friends. So much fun! Until then, how about a good zombie book to read?

In San Francisco, a deadly toxin is released. Within hours it s consumes the entire Bay Area. A small group of survivors, travel through a gauntlet of raging corpses, battling their inner demons and each other along the way.

Picture

Eight months ago the world turned upside-down in the most horrifying way. The dead came back to life and started killing the living. Within weeks, zombies ruled the world. In a small southern Ohio town, Joel, a twenty-something underachiever finds himself holed up with a group of survivors as they take refuge in a church.

Beside the still water...the zombies roam.
A slightly different take on the zombie genre,Smooth asks if the world be better if we were all neutral and complacent (without violence, greed, hatred, and yes, love and compassion) in our personalities? The town of Cold Springs is about to receive the gift of full serenity and some people intend to fight it (as well as the zombies) all the way to the end!

So you think you know how the world ends? Think again! With Piercing Undead, T.L.Decay offers an alternative look at a very different apocalypse scenario. Tom and Melisa return from a week long camping trip to discover a world very different from the one they left behind. Narrowly escaping the claws of the undead, they find themselves at a local Race track where they meet fellow survivors. And it is here that they begin to realize that, in order to stay one step ahead of the piercing claws of death, they need to band together in order to survive..

I was thinking of children and kittens today. My child is fifteen tomorrow and I am so proud of all he can do and of who he is, but like any parent, I mourn the little baby he was. I miss the sweet, faltering steps.  Kitten are the same. I love cats but always miss the kittens they shed away. It's a bittersweet part of life. We loved JEA Press when it was a baby, even as it frequently toddled into things, fell, got back up, and occasionally wailed. We nurtured and fed it well, and JEA grew. May presses fail so we are thankful that JEA has become a "teen-aged" press. Sadly , we also have to make changes and overcome challenges. Trevor Smith and I established JEA to catch some of the exceptional, wonderful books that other presses didn't have room for, and to give them great covers, edits, and make them available.I would never have done this without Trevor. T recently retired from the military and moved, not knowing his bandwidth plan would be almost zero; it's certainly not enough for him to do projects. After soul searching, it is best that Trevor step down as co-CEO. He will remain as an author, a mentor, and friend. I will assume all CEO duties and responsibilities. I am happy, but I do miss the old ways as well. It's actually a way of growing, even if we must adjust and let go of the "kitten version" we love. With no losses, we gain Trevor's ability to write more; we hate that technology, the reason JEA thrives, is also the reason T had to make a hard choice.
Meanwhile, try one of T's books!

The authors of J. Ellington Ashton Press come together with twisted minds, and warped stories to bring you a terrifying collection of short stories. Midnight Remains brings together some of the most renowned small press authors currently in print.

Edward P. Cardillo is the awarding winning author of Automaton, and Odd Tales of an Old Man. His story telling has dubbed him the nick name “Campfire Grandpa” for his ease in relating meaningful yet frightening tales. (Vampires of Exeter / The Devil is in the Details)
R.J. Spears is the author of Sanctuary of the Dead and Lord of the Dead. His zombie tales are realistic and action packed. (Grilling With Zombies / Toofers)
Daniel J. Williams penned the “Mace” series. His novels are gritty and realistic post-apocalyptic drama. (Evil Calls)
Nick Hatfield reminds everyone, when you tell your kids they can be anything, sometimes they decide to be classic horror writers. Nick is a young author with unlimited potential. (Out of the Corner of Your Eye / Night Calls / Back Roads / Seeing Monsters)
catt dahman has a penchant for turning history into horror. Her ability turn even scary events into scarier fiction has her among the leading horror writers of our day. (Counterpoint / End Justifies)
Sharon L. Higa is a purveor of the supernatural. Her novel #6 relates tales from a post death experience. (Dreaper/ Here Kitty Kitty / Dare Ya / Funeral Parlor Blues)
Mark Woods is one of the most talented authors in JEA. He began his penmanship by blogging reviews for other authors, and then moved his extensive knowledge of good story telling into his own work. His novel “Time of Tides” is a block buster. (Plot Holes / Dairy of the Dead)
Michael Fisher is a multi-talented man. He not only contributes writing to this collection, but also the cover. (Return of the Devil Fly)
Tabitha Baumander masterfully tells tales of modern day fantasy and high stakes adventure. Her novel “The Pond” is a prime example of her artistry and skill. (Class Reunion / Hey, Come Here)

Connor Woods is tired of being pushed around, and dragging his space cadet of a younger brother around with him. When he and his brother, Sean, meet their Grandpa Lingus for the first time, the introduction is awkward to say the least.  During the compulsory visits, Grandpa Lingus launches into a series of terrifying tall tales. After some initial resistance, Connor becomes immersed in the horrifying cautionary tales set in the bogs of Ireland, the Black Forest of World War II Germany, the pre-Katrina New Orleans voodoo scene, and the suburbs of New York.
“Beautifully written,” Pulitzer Prize Nominee and Emmy Award Winner, John Ford Noonan

Sharon Higa

What genre(s) do you write in and why?
I write horror, drama, supernatural thrillers, fantasy/action and suspense.  That’s what generally flies through my at any given time.
What is Number 6 about, both on the surface and down deep? What inspired this?
This story was actually based upon a real murder which occurred in California in the 1970’s. It was unsettling to me on an emotional level, as well as giving me the concept of the spirit of a victim exacting revenge.

Do you write for yourself or for readers?
Well I write for myself mostly.  At the end of the day I don’t even really know how much sense I’m making.  But when readers respond favorably it’s extremely rewarding.
